Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a recall notice that has caught widespread attention. The notice involves Mercedes-Benz (China) Automotive Sales Co., Ltd. and Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. According to the announcement, starting November 27, 2024, these companies will recall several imported and domestically produced models manufactured between 2011 and 2019 due to defective wheel speed sensors. This large-scale recall, affecting more than 520,000 vehicles, has become a hot topic in the automotive industry.
Wide Recall Scope: Wheel Speed Sensors Identified as the Culprit
The recall includes a wide range of models, such as imported A-Class, B-Class, CLA, GLA, and domestically produced GLA vehicles. Specifically, 241,861 imported cars and 281,233 domestic GLA cars will be recalled, totaling 523,094 vehicles. The recall stems from an issue with the material used in the wheel speed sensor casing, which lacks sufficient moisture resistance. Prolonged exposure to hot and humid environments may cause the sensors to malfunction, affecting key systems like the electronic stability program (ESP) and anti-lock braking system (ABS). This could pose a significant safety risk by potentially leading to loss of vehicle control while driving.
Free Inspections and Replacements: Mercedes Takes Action to Address Hazards
To address this safety concern, Mercedes-Benz (China) and Beijing Benz will utilize their nationwide authorized dealer network to provide free inspections for affected vehicles. If the wheel speed sensor is found to fall within the specified defective part numbers, it will be replaced at no cost, ensuring that the vehicle’s safety performance remains intact.
Enhanced Regulation: Mercedes’ Recalls Challenge Brand Image
It’s worth noting that this recall was initiated following a defect investigation by the State Administration for Market Regulation, highlighting the regulatory body’s strict oversight of automotive safety issues. This marks Mercedes’ second large-scale recall within a single month, further raising concerns about its brand image.
As a leading German luxury brand, Mercedes has initiated numerous large-scale recalls in recent years, undermining consumer confidence and impacting its brand reputation. Statistics show that as of 2024, Mercedes-Benz has launched 14 recalls, affecting over one million vehicles.
The Positive Side of Recalls: Enhancing Safety and Protecting Consumers
Despite the frequency of these recalls, product defect recalls are an internationally accepted safety regulatory practice with undeniable benefits. By promptly recalling defective products, companies can reduce accidents caused by product failures while continuously improving product quality and service standards. This helps safeguard consumer rights. As the State Administration for Market Regulation stated, “Timely recalls of defective products can effectively prevent consumers from suffering physical harm or property loss due to product defects.”
